Curious about playing Spotify on your Nintendo Switch? Find the answers right here.
While the Nintendo Switch undoubtedly boasts numerous strengths as a console, there are a few notable omissions that slightly diminish its appeal – notably the absence of media apps like the popular music platform, Spotify.
Unlike its competitors, Xbox and PlayStation, which have positioned themselves as comprehensive home entertainment centers for gaming, movies, TV, and music, Nintendo has chosen not to include such features. Currently Nintendo Switch only supports YouTube and Hulu.
In this context, we’ll delve into one of the most widely used apps – Spotify. Specifically, we’ll explore the possibility of enjoying Spotify on the Nintendo Switch. If you’re curious to know, let’s dive in.
Although the idea of Spotify for Nintendo Switch was submitted in 2017, Spotify changed the status to Not Right Now in 2023 with the comment:
“Hey everyone,
Thanks for coming to the Spotify Idea Exchange.
We’ve discussed this idea and while it is interesting, we aren’t able to prioritize it (don’t have any immediate plans to implement this).
If we do have any new information to share, rest assured we’ll check back in here with a new status.“
So don’t expect a Spotify app for Nintendo Switch in the next few year. Luckily there are still several alternatives to listen to Spotify music while playing your favorite game on Nintendo Switch.
You’ll need Bluetooth headphones with a 3.5mm headphone cable. Play music on your phone and transmit it to the headphones via Bluetooth, then connect the 3.5mm cable to your Nintendo Switch. Both audio sources will play simultaneously. Remember to mute in-game music and play music through your phone.
If you own both a Nintendo Switch and an Xbox One, connect the Switch to the Xbox HDMI-in port (usually used for cable boxes). Then, launch the OneGuide app on the Xbox. This setup allows you to use your Switch through the Xbox and play Spotify in the background.
While you can simultaneously play games on your Nintendo Switch and listen to Spotify on your phone, this setup can become inconvenient when using headphones. Some Reddit users have suggested a solution: the HORI Nintendo Switch Splatoon 2 Splat & Chat Headset, which includes a sound mixer (an arrow-shaped device with two cords). By plugging one cord into your Switch and the other into your phone, you can easily enjoy both activities without any hassle.
The skilled modders over at XDA Developers have successfully installed the Android OS onto the Nintendo Switch. This grants access to the usual range of Android apps, including Netflix, Spotify, and more. Enabling Android on your Switch requires several steps and is not recommended for beginners. However, if you’re interested, you can gather the necessary information here to determine if it’s a suitable option for you.
Be warned, however, that installing the Android OS on Switch could damage your warranty or protection – hence we’d probably recommend avoiding it.
