Spotify is a great choice for enjoying music. With its vast library, flexible subscription plans, and social features, Spotify offers you more than you can expect. But sometimes you can encounter glitches on the Spotify app or the Web player. One common issue is the Spotify no sound problem — the app appears to be playing, but you can’t hear it.

This issue can arise from various causes, but it‘s often solvable by checking your device’s sound settings or adjusting the streaming device with Spotify Connect. Additionally, there are several other solutions to help you troubleshoot and resolve the Spotify sound problem. In this article, we have put together the eight most effective methods to fix the Spotify no sound issue and bring the music back to you.

  1. Check Spotify and Your Device Volume
  2. Check the Current Playing Device of Spotify
  3. Check Your Device’s Sound Settings
  4. Restart Spotify and Your Device
  5. Clear Spotify Cache
  6. Update the Spotify App
  7. A Clean Reinstall of the Spotify App
  8. Download Spotify to MP3 and Listen Offline with Another Player

1. Check Spotify and Your Device Volume

If your Spotify is playing without sound, make sure that the volume of your Spotify app and your device is not turned down or muted. In addition, check whether your device’s sound is working. You can test it by playing audio from another app other than Spotify. For computers, you can also check the sound card hardware or software, and if there’s any issue, you may need to contact the manufacturer for help.

2. Check the Current Playing Device of Spotify

Spotify has an interesting feature called Spotify Connect, which allows you to use one device to remotely control listening on another. However, when your Spotify account is connected to multiple devices, this feature may confuse the Spotify app and make Spotify stream on another device instead of this one, resulting in the problem of Spotify playing without sound.

For example, if the Spotify app on your iPhone shows that a track is playing but there is no sound, you may find that the track is actually streamed on another device, such as your Mac. When you adjust the volume on your iPhone, only the volume of your Mac is changed.

listen on another device

To resolve this issue, you need to check what device Spotify is currently streaming on. If your Spotify is playing on another device, switch the streaming device to “THIS Device” with Spotify Connect. Follow these steps to make the changes on your mobile and desktop devices.

On Your Phone or Tablet

  1. Open the Spotify app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android, and play a song.
  2. Tap the Spotify Connect icon from the bottom right of the screen.
  3. Select This Phone as your streaming device.

On Desktop

  1. Launch the Spotify app or sign into your account at spotify.com, and play a song.
  2. Click the Spotify Connect icon at the bottom right.
  3. Select This Computer as your streaming device.

3. Check Your Device’s Sound Settings

The sound settings vary depending on your streaming device. To resolve the no sound issue of Spotify on your Windows or Mac computers, ensure the correct audio output is selected. On mobile devices, there can be different settings for media, ringtones, alarms, etc. Make sure you are adjusting the media volume rather than other sound settings.

On Windows Computer

If you are using Spotify on Windows, you need to check both the output device and the volume mixer settings on your computer.

Check the Output Device

  1. Click the Start button and select Settings.
  2. Select System. Then click Sound on the left pane.
  3. On the right pane, click on the device you want to set as your Output device.

4. Restart Spotify and Your Device

Try to close the Spotify app completely and reopen it. This can refresh the app and resolve temporary glitches that may be causing the sound issue.

If relaunching the app didn’t resolve the problem, try restarting your device. Close all running apps before turning off your device. Wait for at least one minute and power it back on. A simple restart sometimes can solve the system or app-related sound issues by giving them a fresh start and improving the overall performance.

5. Clear Spotify Cache

Spotify stores temporary data in the cache to speed up the loading of content, but a corrupted cache may lead to playback issues, app crashes, or other unexpected behavior such as playing without sound.

Clearing the Spotify cache can remove corrupted or outdated data, free up storage on your device, help the app fetch fresh data from the server, and improve the app’s loading speed. Thus to potentially solve the issue of Spotify keeps playing but no sound.
